Similipal National Park Emerges as a Top Eco-Tourism Destination

Mayurbhanj(SDM):Tucked away in the lush northern forests of Odisha, Similipal National Park is quietly becoming one of India’s most talked-about eco-travel destinations. As the winter travel season picks up, the park has begun welcoming a steady stream of tourists eager to experience its raw, untouched wilderness.

Unlike crowded hill stations and commercial wildlife hubs, Similipal offers something rare — silence broken only by birdsong, the rustle of sal leaves, and the distant call of wildlife. Spread across nearly 2,750 square kilometres, the national park forms part of a biosphere reserve and is known for its rich biodiversity.

Forest officials report a noticeable rise in responsible tourism this year. Safari bookings have increased, especially among wildlife photographers and young travellers seeking offbeat destinations. The park is home to the Royal Bengal Tiger, Asian elephants, leopards, gaur, spotted deer and more than 200 species of birds.

One of the biggest attractions remains the breathtaking Barehipani Waterfall, cascading dramatically through dense forest, along with the serene Joranda Waterfall. Visitors often describe the experience as “stepping into a living postcard.”

Eco-tourism facilities have seen gradual improvements. Regulated safari routes, trained local guides, and eco-friendly accommodations are helping balance tourism with conservation. Importantly, local tribal communities are playing a key role in guiding, hospitality, and promoting traditional crafts — ensuring that tourism directly supports the region’s economy.

Officials have reminded visitors to strictly follow park rules, avoid plastic, and respect wildlife habitats to preserve the fragile ecosystem.

The best time to visit Similipal National Park is from November to June, as the park remains closed during the monsoon season.

With its dense forests, majestic waterfalls, and thriving wildlife, Similipal is not just a destination — it is an experience that reconnects travelers with nature in its purest form.
