A curfew has been imposed in Balasore, Odisha, to remove illegal occupants from railway land

Balasore(SDM) : In order to clear encroachment on railway land, a curfew was enforced in Balasore, Odisha. Before a significant encroachment removal effort to remove persons who have unlawfully moved on railway land, a curfew has been enforced in the Balasore district of Odisha. This action has been taken to make it easier to build the third railway line, which will enhance connectivity and lessen traffic congestion. This new railway line would go via Balasore on its route from Narayangarh in West Bengal to Bhadrak in Odisha.

From Ardabazar to Nayabazar , Haripur to Darji Pokhri Chak, Kasimila Bridge to Phuldi Chaka, Nayabazar Railway Gate, Golapola, and Nayabazar , the curfew would be in force from 4:00 AM to 10:00 PM on January 11 and 12, 2025. market, as specified in the Balasore Sub-Divisional Magistrate's (SDM) order.

This encroachment removal campaign aims to remove those who are illegally occupying railway land. Despite repeated notices issued by the Railway Department, many individuals have yet to abandon the site. This new railway line is a significant infrastructure project that will reduce traffic and increase regional connectivity.

To prevent any disorder during the encroachment removal process and maintain public order, the SDM has issued a curfew order under Section 163 of the BNSS, which empowers officials to prevent any disturbance. An official said, “This curfew is necessary so that there is no disturbance in peace and law and order, as there is a fear of unrest in areas like Mauza-Jadapur, Akatiapur and Bhaskarganj during the process of removing encroachments.

The order also says, "No person shall leave his house, nor travel on foot, nor by vehicle, nor stand or loiter in any public place, except in case of emergency medical assistance." The move follows notices issued earlier, assuring residents of providing alternative land and housing. Despite these efforts, many illegally occupied people have failed to vacate the railway land. Authorities have also stressed that the curfew will help in removing encroachments and maintaining public safety during the process.
